Masonry Restoration

Nickel Masonry & Construction are experts in masonry restoration. We have the experience and knowledge in brick masonry structures, restoring the structural integrity of a masonry or heritage building, as well as refurbishing old buildings brick facades protecting its heritage value. We understand the different methods used to restore a 150 year old building with that of one half its age and take great pride in our masonry restoration process with safety and value of the building or structure in mind.

Water-Proofing Chimneys

Weather-damaged lining systems, flue obstructions and loose masonry materials all present a threat to residents. Regular chimney maintenance is essential to prevent damage, deterioration and future high-cost chimney repairs. While most stone is not affected by water penetration, large amounts of mortar are required to bond the stone together properly. Therefore, a stone chimney – just like a brick chimney – should be protected from the effects of water penetration. Click here to read more information about Water-proofing chimney.

Chimney Rebuild

When these masonry chimneys go bad (and they all go bad) the repair can be very expensive. Call up a chimney contractor to see what can be done about it.

Chimney Lining

Line chimneys with stainless steel or aluminum.

Liners made from aluminum or stainless steel are a relatively easy way of making unlined chimneys useable again. Aluminum can be used with some gas-burning appliances, but stainless steel is the right choice when wood or oil is the fuel.

Liners are either flexible or rigid, but in an old house whose chimneys take lots of twists and turns flexible pipe will be a lot easier to install. It’s pulled through the existing chimney to create an airtight (read that safe) passage for smoke and other exhaust gases.

Chimney Flashings

Flashing refers to thin pieces of impervious material installed to prevent the passage of water into a structure from a joint or as part of a weather resistant barrier (WRB) system. The origin of flash and flashing are uncertain but these words are related to a pool of water and the word splash. Click here to read more about Chimney Flashings.

Chimney Re-pointing

Repointing is the process of renewing the pointing (the external part of mortar joints) in masonry construction. Over time, weathering and decay cause voids in the joints between masonry units (usually bricks), allowing the undesirable entrance of water. Water entering through these voids can cause significant damage through frost weathering and from salt dissolution and deposition. Repointing is also called pointing, or pointing up, although these terms more properly refer to the finishing step in new construction. Click here to read more on chimney repointing.
